Chapter 14

The Duel, Part 1

Lirit

Ira immediately pulled away from Nev, turning on Pan with fury. “What the hell is wrong with you?” she said.

Pan looked at her frowning. “You should have killed him instead of bringing him back.”

“I killed two of them. I could have killed him too if I wanted,” Ira said. “Did you ever think for just a second I had a reason for bringing him back?”

Pan frowned at her. “These scum burned my camp. They don't deserve to live.”

“I didn't say he deserved to live,” Ira growled. “I said, I had a reason for bringing him back instead of killing him immediately. But you're so stubborn and stupid and hotheaded, that you don't think things through, especially in the moment.”

“I think everything through,” Pan said.

“Really?” she demanded. She stalked across the camp and Lirit was relieved that she wasn't going towards Pan. But then she bent down to pick up her machete, and she spun on Pan again. “Well then, Pan,” Ira snapped. “Why did these men burn down your camp?”

Pan didn't answer.

“Oh, you don't know,” Ira said. “Huh. I wonder how we could find that answer,” she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “How about this? The magic they're using, is it the same as yours? Is it gained the same way? Are the spirits sharing the magic that they give you to protect Neverland with these menaces that have their own agenda?”

Again, Pan didn't answer and Ira shook her head.

“Oh, you don't know that either. Huh? How about this? When they were taking me, they knew who I was. And while they were impressed, they intended to take me back to their leader so he could eat me. And I'm willing to bet it's not the pleasant kind of eating.”

Lirit had to swallow a chuckle. Pivo sputtered before he could contain himself. Des had a hand over his mouth. And although Nev was smirking at her comment, the other Lost Boys did everything they could to keep their expressions completely neutral. Uninvolved.

“So tell me, Peter Fucking Pan, who is their leader? What is it that they want besides eating me? Because even though that might have been on their agenda, burning down your camp had nothing to do with me and everything to do with you.”

“What makes you think so?” Pan asked. “Maybe they did it because they didn't like you being with us.”

“I know you'd like to think that,” Ira said as she started stalking towards him. “And kudos to you for digging deep and bringing this back around to what you want, but that coyote they killed is a direct message to you. Not me.”

She swung her machete up and brought it down on Pan with swift strength. Lirit was sure that the darkness covering her arms had something to do with the added strength in her swing.

For a second, Lirit stared in absolute awe at how amazing she was. This girl, this outsider, who was sent here to fix their world. Who owed Neverland precisely nothing.
